We have been so programmed to excuse and label our symptoms ‘I’m getting old,’ ‘It’s my
genetics’ ‘it runs in my family’ ‘I’ve tried everything, but it’s not working, ‘everyone is tired!’
We are so used to feeling bad or not optimal without even realizing our negative programmed
responses. When going through my own health issues, I knew the excuses and often told them
to myself ‘you’re pregnant, you’ll feel better when your baby comes out!’ But they didn’t get
better and eventually I had to start digging for answers if I was ever going to feel good again!
I often find myself asking the question WHY in my head. Not why is this happening to me?
Because I am in control of most of what happens to me. But why is this happening in my body?
What am I exposing myself to- consciously or subconsciously? What do my thoughts have to do
with my health? How am I talking to myself? What foods am I consuming? How much sunlight
and movement am I getting? And if I’m checking the boxes, why am I still not feeling my best?
These questions lead me to the path of functional medicine! Taken from the Institute for
Functional Medicine’s website, “The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-
centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together
to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a
detailed understanding of each patient’s genetics, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and
leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient
outcomes.”
In short, functional medicine looks to answer the WHY you are experiencing these symptoms.
Once we figure out the why and make adjustments in your lifestyle, diet, and supplementation
then we can make progress towards getting you feeling your best!
